Boniva Drug Interactions (Cont.)

Boniva Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Boniva is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Aspirin
Both aspirin and Boniva are irritating to the stomach. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking aspirin if you are taking Boniva. Of course, no other medications (including aspirin) should be taken within one hour of taking Boniva.

Calcium-Containing Products
Calcium binds to Boniva in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. While it is usually important for people with osteoporosis to take calcium, it should not be taken within one hour of taking Boniva.

Iron Supplements
Iron binds to Boniva in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. Do not take iron supplements within an hour of taking Boniva.

Magnesium-Containing Products
Magnesium binds to Boniva in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. Do not take magnesium supplements within an hour of taking Boniva.

Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs
Both NSAIDs and Boniva are irritating to the stomach. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking an NSAID if you are taking Boniva. Of course, no other medications (including NSAIDs) should be taken within one hour of taking Boniva.

Teriparatide
In studies, combining teriparatide with medications like Boniva seemed to make teriparatide less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
