Evista and Insomnia

Several side effects are possible with Evista, and insomnia has been reported as one of them. However, it was also reported by almost as many women who were taking a placebo, so the risk is slight. If you are taking Evista and insomnia symptoms occur, try improving your sleep habits. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day and avoid caffeine at least four hours before bedtime.

Evista and Insomnia: An Overview

Insomnia is a possible side effect of Evista® (raloxifene hydrochloride). In clinical studies, insomnia was reported in up to 5.5 percent of women taking Evista. However, insomnia was almost as common (4.3 percent) in women taking the placebo (which contained no active ingredient). Therefore, Evista increases the risk of insomnia only slightly.

What Is Insomnia?

People with insomnia have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep
  • Waking up too early in the morning
  • Experiencing non-refreshing sleep.

Evista and Insomnia: Suggestions

Whether your insomnia is caused by Evista or other factors, it may be improved by changing your sleep habits. Some tips for better sleep include the following:

  • Don't nap later than 3 p.m.
  • Keep a regular sleep-wake cycle. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine in the four to six hours before bedtime.
  • Don't exercise within two hours of bedtime. Exercising five or six hours before bedtime, however, may help you sleep more soundly.
  • Don't eat large meals within two hours of bedtime.
  • Sleep in a dark, quiet room with a comfortable temperature.
  • If you can't fall asleep within 20 minutes, do a quiet activity somewhere else and return to bed when you're sleepy.
  • Wind down in the 30 minutes before bedtime with a relaxing pre-sleep ritual, such as a warm bath, soft music, or reading.
