Fosamax Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Fosamax is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
 
Aspirin
Both aspirin and Fosamax can be irritating to the stomach. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking aspirin if you are taking Fosamax. Of course, no other medications (including aspirin) should be taken within 30 minutes of taking your Fosamax dosage.
 
Calcium Products
Calcium binds to Fosamax in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. While it is usually important for people with osteoporosis to take calcium, it should not be taken within 30 minutes of taking Fosamax.
 
Iron Supplements
Iron binds to Fosamax in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. Do not take iron supplements within 30 minutes of taking Fosamax.
 
Magnesium Products
Magnesium binds to Fosamax in the stomach, preventing it from being absorbed in the body and making it less effective. Do not take magnesium supplements within 30 minutes of taking Fosamax.
 
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Both NSAIDs and Fosamax can be irritating to the stomach. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking an NSAID if you are taking Fosamax. Of course, no other medications (including NSAIDs) should be taken within 30 minutes of taking Fosamax.
 
Teriparatide
In studies, combining teriparatide with medications like Fosamax seemed to make teriparatide less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
