Fosamax Drug Interactions

When aspirin, magnesium products, or a number of other medications are taken with Fosamax, drug interactions can occur. These interactions can increase your risk of side effects or reduce the effectiveness of Fosamax. Food and beverages (other than water) can also cause Fosamax drug interactions, preventing the medication from being absorbed into the body and making it less effective.

Fosamax^® (alendronate sodium) can potentially interact with a number of other medications. Many interactions can make Fosamax less effective, while others may increase the risk of side effects. Some of the medicines that may lead to Fosamax drug interactions include:

Aspirin
Calcium products, including many antacids
Iron supplements
Magnesium products
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as:

Celecoxib (Celebrex^®)
Diclofenac (Cataflam^®, Voltaren^®)
Etodolac (Lodine^®)
Ibuprofen (Motrin^®, Advil^®)
Indomethacin (Indocin^®)
Ketoprofen (Orudis^®)
Meloxicam (Mobic^®)
Nabumetone (Relafen^®)
Naproxen (Naprosyn^®) or naproxen sodium (Aleve^®, Anaprox^®, Naprelan^®)
Oxaprozin (Daypro^®)

Teriparatide (Forteo™).

Food and beverages (other than water) can also interact with Fosamax, preventing it from being absorbed into the body and making it less effective. Fosamax should be taken with water in the morning on an empty stomach. Do not eat or drink anything (besides water) before taking the drug and for 30 minutes afterwards.
