Osteoporosis Home > Miacalcin Nasal Spray Side Effects
Back pain, runny or stuffy nose, and other nasal symptoms are the most common side effects of Miacalcin nasal spray. Rare side effects include increased appetite, hair loss, and migraines. While most side effects are minor and easily treated, some are potentially serious and should be reported to a healthcare provider right away, including depression, frequent nosebleeds, or severe nasal irritation.
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Miacalcin® nasal spray (calcitonin salmon nasal spray); however, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Miacalcin nasal spray. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Miacalcin nasal spray has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, in which a group of people taking the drug have side effects documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, the most common side effects of Miacalcin nasal spray included:
- Runny or stuffy nose -- in up to 12 percent of people
- Other nasal symptoms (such as nasal crusting, redness, irritation, and bleeding) -- up to 10.6 percent
- Back pain -- up to 5 percent.
Other common Miacalcin nasal spray side effects (occurring in 1 to 3 percent of people) included:
- Wearing away of joint cartilage
- Muscle pain
- Sinus infection
- Upper respiratory tract infection (such as the common cold)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Indigestion or heartburn
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Bladder infection
- Unusual sensations (such as burning or tingling).
