Miacalcin Nasal Spray and Pregnancy: An Overview

Miacalcin^® nasal spray (calcitonin salmon nasal spray) is a prescription osteoporosis medication. It is approved only for use in postmenopausal women. The drug may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are not currently known. Studies in pregnant animals have suggested that Miacalcin nasal spray may cause problems when used during pregnancy.

 

Miacalcin Nasal Spray and Pregnancy Category C

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but that do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Also, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

 

In pregnant rabbits, very high doses of Miacalcin nasal spray given by injection increased the risk of low birth weight. The drug does not cross the placenta, however, so it does not reach the fetus directly.

 

It is important to note that Miacalcin nasal spray is not approved for women who are premenopausal, including pregnant women.
