Osteopenia is a type of condition that results in decreased bone density. A healthcare provider can diagnose it using a bone density test. This condition is a milder form of osteoporosis, as people who have osteopenia have less bone loss occurring than in someone who has osteoporosis. However, people who have it are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis. It is recommended that people who are 65 years old or older have a bone density test.
